Over the last 150 years mankind has increasingly relied upon burning fossils fuels for the generation of power and for powering cars, trains, aeroplanes etc. One unwelcome consequence of this activity has been the accumulation of waste gases such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. These gases are known as greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases trap radiated heat in the Earth's atmosphere and have resulted in a perceptible increase in the average temperature of the Earth's surface over the last few decades.
The vast majority of scientists now believe that global warming is occurring and is a consequence of human activity. They believe that significant global warming is now unavoidable and that this will have serious consequences for the environment. Global warming will results in dramatic changes in weather patterns, rises in sea level, desertification and the melting of the ice sheets. Because the Earth is a dynamic system small changes in one area can have effects on other areas that can be magnified.
If we cannot stop global warming we must do everything we can to minimise its effect on our planet.
